Dryer and home appliance simulation – Using DEM in product development

Discrete element method (DEM) is applicable to simulating particle flow. Particles are everywhere around us: Dirt, sand, pebbles, grains, hay, minerals, ores, manufactured materials like tablets, powders, etc. DEM is for modeling behavior of particles of different sizes and shapes, and can even model fibers in clothing.

In this webinar, a novel approach to using CFD simulation and DEM is presented for modeling the flow inside a dryer including clothing items like socks or t-shirts to fully understand and explore design options. Best practices for defining a DEM study using CFD software is explained and how to uniquely model similar processes during product development to achieve market differentiating design performance.

You will learn:

  • An introduction to coupling CFD simulation with discrete element method (DEM)
  • Use of multi-physics modeling capabilities for appliance and white goods product development
  • Assessing airflow and heat transfer within dryer inclusive of dynamically moving clothing
